A Clinical Review in Surgical Case of Intestinal Obstruction in Infancy and Children


Abstract
This article reports a clinical and statistical review of 170 cases of intestinal obstruction in infancy and children under the age of 15 years, which were treated at the Chonnam National Universty Hospital from January 1971 to December, 1974.
1) As for the etiological classification in order of frequency in our 170 cases intussusception 69 cases (40.7%), intestinal obstruction due to congenital disease 61 cases (35.8%), intestinal obstruction due to adhesion 25 cases (14.4%). .
those were more than 90% in all cases.
2) Regional distribution showed those 112 cases (65, 9) were obstruction in small intestine and 35 cases (20.5) were in large intestine and colon. The ratio of small intestine and large intestine was 3.2 1.
3) The age range in majority of patients was finder the age of 6 months (45.3%), 7-12 months (24.7%), 1~2 years (9%). 75. 3% of the patients were under the age of 2 years.
4) The sex distribution assumed the ratio of 3-8: 1 with 133 males and 37 females.
5) The main symptoms and signs were vomiting in 140 cases (82.3%), abdominal pain, in 122 cases (71.8%), abdominal distention in 75 cases (44. 1%), bloody stool in 54 cases (31.8%) and difficulty of defecation in 52 cases (31.5%).
6) As for the operative fashion in order of frequency in our 170 cases; 45 cases were manual reduction of intussusceotion with cecopexy, 20 cases abdominoperineal anoplasty, 18 cases enterolysis, 15 cases pyloromyotomy and etc.
7) The mortality was 15.5% (26 cases in all 170 cases).
The most frequent cause of death was electrolyte imbalance (14 cases, 53.8%).
